1. The sleek ponytail
An imperative look this season, the ponytail was seen on the runways from New York to Paris. The buzzwords here are low and sleek, pulled together for an ultra-minimalist allure. Variations on the fuss-free style included accessorized, high-shine, wet look and messy.
And also: Oscar de la Renta, Balmain, Giambattista Valli, Paco Rabanne, Jacquemus, Olivier Theyskens, Stella McCartney, Prada…
2. The return of gel
The favorite product of hairstylists this season is undoubtedly gel, whether it is used to fix a ponytail bring impeccable shine to a bun or to scrape hair back off the face. The only rule? More is more.
3. The sculpted fringe
Despite a few shy appearances from long Seventies-style bangs, their more sophisticated older sister stole the limelight at Fashion Week Fall/Winter 2019-2020. Using industrial quantities of gel, the models’ fringes were sculpted into waves and baroque patterns, letting the hairstylists’ creativity truly sing.
4. Grunge spirit
It only took a few daubs of gel, a little lacquer and hair dye to spark a spirit of anti-conformism at Fashion Week Fall/Winter 2019-2020. The hairstyles were messy and enhanced with pastel tints, for looks that felt punk, grunge and bondage-inspired.
5. Statement accessories
Statement hair clips dominated the runways at Fashion Week, seen at Versace, Marc Jacobs and Mary Katzantrou to name a few. A telltale sign of an en vogue hairstyle this season, three versions were especially prominent: 1/ The badass one, worn with a wrapped ponytail at Alexander McQueen or a PVC headband at Alexander Wang. 2/ The girly one, such as the pearl headband seen at Simone Rocha, or the snowy mountain motifs at Chanel. 3/ The couture one, embellished with real jewels as seen at Versace and Oscar de la Renta.
6. The shaved head
Taking the short hair trend a step further, shaved heads were seen on the runways, following in the wake of the genderless wave storming the runways. In short, it’s striking, effortless and utterly empowering.
7. Braids revisited
This season, braids were given yet another haute couture reimagining. Among our favorites were the extra-long Adamms family-style parallel plaits at Prada and tight jewel-embellished cornrows embellished at Paco Rabanne.
8. The high society look
A torrent of curls flooded the runway, as well as Seventies-style bangs, complementing the distinctly bourgeois allure of the Celine show. Or for a more retro example, think Y/Project and the square sculpted hairstyles, fixed with a healthy dose of gel.
